Developmental Education

One of the greatest challenges facing colleges is the large number of students in need of remediation in reading, writing, and mathematics and the academic support services necessary to assist students in meeting academic requirements. More and more students enter college academically underprepared, which poses a threat to our nation’s competiveness in a global society. As an open-admissions institution, Mesabi Range College serves a large number of underprepared students who are at a greater risk of leaving college without obtaining a diploma or degree, allowing them fewer options to secure a financial future for themselves and their families.

The College uses placement test results to determine the number of developmental sections needed. In the 2008-2009 academic year, MnSCU required all of its institutions to change to a new platform for the assessment instrument (ACCUPLACER). Mesabi Range College is currently working with NHED’s Office of Institutional Research to correlate placement scores and data to effectively track areas within developmental education.

Developmental class sizes range from 20 in Efficient Reading to 25 in Basic and Refresher English and 20 in Arithmetic with Applications with 30 in Beginning and Higher Algebra.
