Chris Vito - Head Coach
Chris Vito has been named the new head baseball coach at Mesabi Range College. The native of Eveleth, Minn. comes to Mesabi after a two-year stint as an assistant coach at St. Cloud Technical and Community College. Coach Vito helped guide the Cyclones to a 35-8 overall record, an MCAC Championship and a second place finish in Region XIII this past season.
Coach Vito was the head baseball coach at the University of Minnesota Crookston (NCAA Division II) for seven seasons from the fall of 2007 to the spring of 2014. He also served as assistant sports information director and taught CPR and First Aid Classes.
Coach Vito had the privilege of guiding a team of collegiate athletes in Europe for USA Athletes International from July 19-27, 2009. The team went 5-1in Amsterdam, Belgium and France including a second place finish at the prestigious Rouen 76 Tournament in Rouen, France. He also served on the sports information staff at the 2009 American Legion World Series in Fargo, N.D.
Coach Vito coached at Mesabi Range College in Virginia, Minn. where he served as assistant coach in 2007. Coach Vito helped guide the Norse to a 25-12 overall record as well as third place finishes in the Minnesota Community College Conference State Tournament and Region XIII Tournament.
Coach Vito coached at the University of Wisconsin-Superior from the fall of 1999 until the spring of 2006. He served as head baseball coach his last three seasons. He also taught in the UW-Superior Health and Human Performance Department from 2000-2007 and served as Sports Information Director from 2000-2004. Prior to that, Coach Vito was a graduate assistant baseball coach under Dr. Mitch McLeod at North DakotaStateUniversity in Fargo, N.D. from 1997 to 1999. He also served as an administrative assistant within the NDSU Athletic Department.
Coach Vito also coached in Hibbing, Minn. for seven seasons where he served as an assistant coach with the high school, American Legion, and VFW Baseball programs. He also coached VFW and American Legion Baseball in Mountain Iron, Minn. and Babe Ruth and VFW Baseball in Eveleth, Minn.
A 1991 graduate of Eveleth-Gilbert High School, Coach Vito received an Associate of Arts Degree from Mesabi Range College in Virginia, Minn. in 1993 and a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Physical Education from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1995. He received a Master's o Education Degree with an Athletic Administration Emphasis from North Dakota State University in 1999.
Dave Kunz - Assistant Coach
Assistant Coach Dave Kunz brings over 20 years of baseball coaching experience to the Mesabi Range College program. Coach Kunz gained his baseball experience playing and coaching in New Ulm, MN and as a student manager at the University of Minnesota.
While new to the college ranks, Coach Kunz has played and coached at all levels from t-ball to high school and has also played college and amateur baseball. He was the head coach of New Ulm Legion Gold baseball team for ten seasons. His stint included eight state tournaments and two regional appearances.
Coach Kunz is a member of the New Ulm American Legion Hall of Fame. He currently teaches in the Eveleth-Gilbert school district and is the American Legion District 8 Baseball Director and has been selected to work five American Legion regional tournaments.
