Chris Vito - Head Coach
Chris Vito enters his fourth season head baseball coach at Mesabi Range College. His 2017 squad appeared in the NJCAA Region XIII tournament and won 17 games that season,
The native of Eveleth, Minn. arrived at MRC after a two-year stint as an assistant coach at St. Cloud Technical and Community College. Coach Vito was the head baseball coach at the University of Minnesota Crookston for seven seasons from the fall of 2007 to the spring of 2014. He also served as assistant sports information director and taught American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response courses.
Coach Vito had the privilege of guiding a team of collegiate athletes in Europe for USA Athletes International from July 19-27, 2009. The team went 5-1in Amsterdam, Belgium and France including a second place finish at the prestigious Rouen 76 Tournament in Rouen, France. He also served on the sports information staff at the 2009 American Legion World Series in Fargo, N.D.
Coach Vito served as an assistant coach at MRC in 2007. He helped guide the Norse to a 25-12 overall record as well as a third place finish in the Minnesota Community College Conference State Tournament and a fourth place finish in the Region XIII Tournament.
Coach Vito coached at the University of Wisconsin-Superior from the fall of 1999 until the spring of 2006. He served as head baseball coach his last three seasons. He also taught in the UW-Superior Health and Human Performance Department from 2000-2007 and served as Sports Information Director from 2000-2004. Prior to that, Coach Vito was a graduate assistant baseball coach at North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D. from 1997 to 1999. He also served as an administrative assistant within the NDSU Athletic Department.
Coach Vito also coached in Hibbing, Minn. for seven seasons where he served as an assistant coach with the high school, American Legion, and VFW Baseball programs. He also coached VFW and American Legion Baseball in Mountain Iron, Minn. and Babe Ruth and VFW Baseball in Eveleth, Minn.
A 1991 graduate of Eveleth-Gilbert High School, Coach Vito received an Associate of Arts Degree from Mesabi Range College in 1993 and a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Physical Education from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1995. He received a Master's of Education Degree with an Athletic Administration Emphasis from North Dakota State University in 1999.
Coach Vito serves as the Perkins Coordinator and PSEO Academic Advisor at MRC.
Dave Kunz - Assistant Coach
Assistant Coach Dave Kunz brings over 20 years of baseball coaching experience to the Mesabi Range College program. He enters his fourth year with the program. Coach Kunz gained his baseball experience playing and coaching in New Ulm, MN and as a student manager at the University of Minnesota. Coach Kunz has played and coached at all levels from t-ball to high school and has also played college and amateur baseball. He was the head coach of New Ulm Legion Gold baseball team for ten seasons. His stint included eight state tournaments and two regional appearances. Coach Kunz is a member of the New Ulm American Legion Hall of Fame. He currently teaches in the Eveleth-Gilbert School District.
Devin Mayry enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Mesabi Range College Baseball program. He is no stranger to MRC as he played for the Norse in 2017 when they won 17 games and appeared in the Region XIII tournament. Coach Mayry was named MCAC Academic All-Conference. He is native of Iron, MN and a 2016 graduate of Cherry High School. Coach Mayry graduated from St. Cloud State University in 2019 with a degree in Sport and Recreation Management.
